RMG138-Keychains

For todays podcast, we're going to use the show notes format that Adam Curry developed.

Today's podcast was recorded at the Radio MacGuys World Headquarters in rainy North Florida.

We do a short piece on deja vu adventure in Apple retail today.

Problem with my iPod and the solution I found.

News on IBM announcing that they will lay off 15,000 employees; mostly in the UK.

Meanwhile, in the land of OZ, otherwise known as Australia, there is a report of a project were laid off IT folks are doing open source software development to meet the community service requirements of people receiving government aid.

Today's question comes from a reader who asks about the Apple Keychain and the shareware application Pastor.

Welcome to the latest independent Apple Centere. A-Mac is located in Utrecht in the Netherlands. There's a nice set of photos of the grand opening on the Dutch language Mac OS site, MacOSX.nl.

RMG137-Personal File Sharing

Thanks to Austin Michael Internet Solutions for their sponsorship of Radio MacGuys.

More news on the VPN issue with Tiger. We mentioned a few days ago that the Cisco VPN client didn't work under Tiger. Yesterday eWeek reported that several VPN clients are broken under Tiger.

Todays question is about file sharing. A listener asks why he can't share external hard drives on his local network. The reason is that for (and this is a guess) security reasons, Apple does not support personal file sharing except for the contents of the public folder in your directory. One good way to get around this restriction is to use SharePoints, a very sweet little piece of "donationware" that brings back the ability to share files and devices just like we did prior to MacOS X.

Apple announced some new iMacs today. The new machines are faster, have more memory, a dual layer Superdrive (on models with a Superdrive), built in Airport Extreme and built-in Bluetooth.

Our GarageBand song of the day is from The Trisonics, an interesting band from Munich in Germany.

RMG136-Securing Wirelss Networks

Thanks to our friends at Austin Michael Internet Solutions.

Today's podcast is all about wireless security. Answering a listeners question, I recommend open networks and locked up laptops. In listening to the podcast as I was creating the mp3's, I can't believe that I neglected to say anything about firewalls. I'll talk about it more in the next podcast, but for the record, please turn on your firewall.

Our listener feedback line is working now. If you want to leave us an audio message, please call our listener feedback line at +1(415) 367-3746.

Our GarageBand.com tune for today is by New Zealand song writer, dave keegan. Look for the link to his personal web site on his GarageBand page. It's worth a visit.
